MONTREAL -- The awards continue to pile up for
Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, a 22-year-old medical student at McGill University who is currently the No.1-ranked prospect by the Canadian Football League's scouting bureau.
The two-time all-star offensive tackle, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound native of St. Hilaire, Que., is one of two CIS football players to earn Capital One Academic All-District honours, an award voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of America, to recognize North America's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Duvernay-Tardif joins Calgary Dinos quarterback
Andrew Buckley as the only two CIS players selected in the College Division of the All-District teams, which are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The College Division combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
First-team All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, which will be cast later this month.
Duvernay-Tardif becomes only the fourth McGill athlete in school history to earn all-district status. Previous honorees include football players
J.P. Veri (1991) and
Bruno Pietrobon (1987), as well as basketball's
Willie Hinz (1983).
Earlier in the week, Duvernay-Tardif was one of eight CIS student-athletes presented with a Governor General's Academic All-Canadian commendation.
Next week, during the Vanier Cup festivities in Quebec City, the Redmen co-captain will be up for two more awards as a national candidate for the J.P. Metras and Russ Jackson trophies, respectively, presented to the most outstanding lineman and the player who best combines football with academics and leadership.
