Ross homers as Redmen inundate Islanders

COTE ST. LUC, Que. -- First baseman Joel Ross homered and knocked in three runs as McGill crushed the John Abbott College Islanders 20-4 at Gary Carter Field. Thursday.

Depite the mercy rule being applied, which shortened the game to only five innings, McGill's offensive output established a school record for most runs scored, surpassing the previous high in a 16-9 victory over Ottawa, Oct. 7, 2006. It was also was one run shy of the CIBA Northern Conference record set by Concordia in a 21-2 decision over John Abbott on Sept. 17, 2009.

McGill, which only had eight hits in the game, took advantage of 13 walks, two hit batsmen and six errors committed by the Islanders. The Redmen scored five runs in the first inning, three in the second and third innings and then exploded for nine more in the fourth.

Ross went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, was hit by a pitch and scored three runs. His two-run homer to the deep left-centre power alley put the game out of reach at 8-1 in the second inning.

The Redmen have now smacked a sigle-season record six home runs.

The only multi-hit player for McGill was left-fielder Casey Auerbach, who went 2-for-3, with a pair of runs scored, a double and an RBI.

McGill starter Simon Ehrmantraut collected the win, scattering seven hits over four innings. he allowed four earned runs, struck out five and walked three.

With three games remaining before playoffs, the Redmen moved into a tie with Carleton for third place. Both teams are 7-6.

McGill now hits the road to play a doubleheader for a critical series against second-place Ottawa (5-4), on Sept. 28 at 12 noon and 3 p.m. The Redmen will then close out the campaign by hosting John Abbott on Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
