Redmen ready for revenge, tame Mustangs, advance to CUFLA final against Gryphons

OSHAWA, Ont -- Connor Goodwin of New Westminster, B.C., scored four goals and added a pair of assists as McGill tamed the Western Mustangs 15-6 in a Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association's sudden-death semifinal at Oshawa Civic Stadium, Saturday.

Third-seeded Guelph upset top-seeded Brock 13-12 in the other semi, setting up a Redmen-Gryphons final in Sunday's Baggataway Cup title match at 1:30 p.m. The rivals met in last year's CUFLA final, won 14-11 by Guelph at Percival Molson Stadium.

Goodwin, an electrical engineering senior and all-conference attacker, was named player of the game. He tallied two of his goals on the power-play. Teammate Anders Bjella of Milwaukee, Wis., also notched four goals.

"Connor was very dominant the whole game," McGill head coach Tim Murdoch said. "He really ran the offence from midfield and had some deadly accuracy with his shots."

Redmen scoring came early and often, as the team jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one quarter. While Western's Sam Neeb struck first, their only lead of the game evaporated two minutes later while shorthanded, as Bjella responded with his first of the afternoon. McGill followed with quick tallies from midfielder Rhys Burnell, defender Quinton Bradley and attacker Alexander Rohrbach.

McGill added four more in the second frame with Bjella, Jack Stewart and Emile Sassone-Lawless and Goodwin netting singles to make it 8-1 at halftime.

Bjella and Goodwin both completed their hat-tricks in the third quarter to give the Redmen a comfortable 11-1 lead heading into a wild fourth quarter, The Mustangs made a late charge in the final frame, outscoring McGill 5-4, capitalizing on numerous Redmen substitutions and two man-advantages. Goodwin and Bjella, however, each found the net for a fourth time, and Jake Gutman and Spencer Bromley also got on the scoreboard.

McGill all-star goaltender William Waesche allowed just one goal on five shots through three quarters to collect the victory before being relieved by senior James Spagnuolo who allowed five goals on eight shots. Western counterpart Zach Grace was beaten for all 15 goals for the loss.

Discipline was also key for the Redmen, as they took only two penalties over the first three quarters, limiting Western's opportunities to strike.

"Because of our final-six format, it's very unforgiving for the teams that have to play the prior night," said Murdoch, whose troops were rested with a first-round bye, while Western had to eke out a 17-16 overtime win over Queen's in a quarter-final. "We had spent a lot of time in preparation as a team, we all watched the game the prior night where they struggled to beat Queen's. Mentally and physically, we were prepared — I think it's the best lacrosse we've played as a team."

McGill will vie for their second-ever Baggataway Cup national title, having previously won in 2012.
