MONTREAL --
Calvin Simpson, a McGill rugby player from Victoria, B.C., has been named rookie of the year and is one of three Redmen members named to the RSEQ conference all-star team. Joining him on the dream squad are teammates
Usman Naqvi, a native of Dubai, and
Kylan Gibbs of White Rock, B.C.
Simpson is a 19-year-old arts sophomore in his first year with the Redmen. The 6-foot-3, 192-pound flanker started in seven of the team's eight games and tied for fifth in team scoring with 10 points from a pair of tries.
Naqvi. a 5-foot-9, 186-pound flanker,
was fourth in team scoring with 15 points and second in tries with three. A 21-year-old arts senior majoring in economics, he is expected to graduate in June.
Gibbs is a 5-foot-11, 197-pound prop. The 21-year-old political science senior started all eight contests and tallied one try.
Division-leading Concordia led all schools with five-players named to the dream team. Second-place Bishop's placed four players, while third place McGill had three, fourth-place Montreal added a pair and fifth-place Sherbrooke had one.
Joining Simpson among the major award winners was the Concordia duo of
Yannick Fortin (player of the year) and
Gonzalo Manrique (leadership) , along with Bishop's bench boss
