ZARAGONZA, Spain --
Rowan Barrett, Jr. of Mississauga, Ont., scored a game-high 23 points as Canada rebounded from a shocking loss to Turkey, to soundly defeat Australia 96-58 in the consolation round at the FIBA U-17 world basketball championship, a 16-team tournament in Spain, Friday.
Canada, under the direction of McGill University head coach
David DeAveiro, improved their record to 5-1 and will confront France (4-2) for fifth place on Sunday at 10 a.m. (Eastern).
The Canadians, who are now 4-0 lifetime against Australia, led 27-12 after the first quarter, 52-24 at the half and 86-42 after three.
Barrett was one of four Canuck teammates to reach double digits in scoring, along with
Ignas Brazdeikis (18),
Danilo Djuricic (17) and
Emmanuel Akot (14).
Samson Froling led the Aussies with a dozen points and nine rebounds.
The Canadians shot a lofty 50.7 per cent from the field (36/71), went 9-for 17 from three-point range (52.9) and drained 15 of 15 free-throws (60.0). Australia connected on 32.3, 18.5 and 64.7, respectively.
In other games, France rolled past Korea 119-61. The Koreans (3-3) will play Australia (2-4) for seventh. Turkey (5-1) overcame hosts Spain 83-79 in overtime to reach another milestone in their basketball history by advancing to the tourney final where they will take on the undefeated three-time reigning champions United States. The Americans (6-0) advanced with a 98-70 victory over Lithuania.
