Bench brigade bags record 74 as Redmen bash Bishop's by biggest spread in 41 years

MONTREAL -- Noah Daoust of Dorval, Que., tallied a game-high 18 points off the bench as fifth-ranked McGill toppled Bishop's 108-57 in RSEQ men's basketball, Saturday, at Love Competition Hall to convincingly avenge a stunning 86-81 loss to the Gaiters the night before.

It was the third time this season that McGill had breached the 100-point plateau -- the second time against Bishop's -- and the 51-point margin of victory was the most by the Redmen in league play since a 94-39 decision over the Gaiters on Jan. 14, 1977. Including non-conference play, the spread was McGill's highest since a 108-56 preseason win over Waterloo on Oct. 18, 2015.

"We played with a lot more energy today, a lot more purpose," said Redmen bench boss David DeAveiro, who now owns a 369-233 record in 602 games overall, including a 159-106 mark at McGill. "We followed the game plan... caused 36 turnovers and that's just because we were a little more energetic, a little more focused on what we wanted to do, and we rewarded ourselves with a very good win."

The Redmen led 27-16 after one, 50-34 at halftime, 82-49 after the third quarter and then manhandled the Gaiters 26-8 in the final stanza. McGill amassed a school-record 74 points off the bench, breaking the previous mark of 53 set in a 92-56 victory over Laval, Nov. 9, 2017.

"It's something we're comfortable with," said DeAveiro of the bench rotation that resulted in four subs scoring in double digits. "When we bring people in, we don't really expect a let-down. We expect our bench to dominate the other team's bench. A lot of our kids could probably start at other schools or they could start in our line-up. They're a big part of our success, especially with the style that we want to play."

Daoust, a 6-foot-7, 221-pound centre, shot 4-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-5 from three-point range, and netted eight of nine free-throws. The 22-year-old industrial relations senior also pulled down five rebounds, stole four balls and had three assists, all in just 17 minutes of court time.

"Noah played extremely well," DeAveiro said. "He played like he's capable of playing. We're looking for that consistency from Noah but I was really happy with him tonight and the way he bounced back from last night and with the whole team in general."

Co-Captain Francois Bourque of Terrebonne, Que., was the only starter to score in double figures with 13 points. The fifth-year management senior shot 5-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-5 from the charity stripe. He was credited with four rebounds and stole four balls.

Three Redmen finished with a dozen points apiece: Jenning Leung of the Philippines had three treys, corralled four rebounds and had one assist and a steal. Avery Cadogan of Winnipeg, Man., managed a pair of treys and collected three rebounds. one assist and a block. Isaiah Cummins of Oshawa, Ont., had one three, a rebound, four assists, three steals and a block.

Abdul Kamane led the Gaiters with 17 points and Jordan Thornhill had 11.

McGill had a dominant 23-9 margin in steals, setting a single-game school record in that department. They held a 34-32 edge in rebounds and a favourable 36-19 difference in turnovers, while both teams were credited with two blocks. The Redmen shot a remarkable 49.4 per cent from the field (39/79), 34.5 from three-point range (10/29), and 69.0 from the free-throw line (20/29).

Bishop's shot 37 per cent from the field (20/54), 27.8 from downtown (5/18) and 57.1 from the free-throw line (12/21).

The division-leading Redmen improved to 8-2 with six games remaining on their schedule before playoffs. They have a four-point lead over second-place Laval (6-3) and can clinch a playoff spot with a victory when they host the Rouge et Or on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. at Love Competition Hall. The fourth-place Gaiters (3-8) visit cellar-dwelling UQAM (2-8) on Feb. 8 in a key game that could determine the final post-season berth.
