Mariam Sylla, a pharmacology junior at McGill University, has been nothing short of phenomenal over her first three seasons with the Martlets.
 
After being voted CIS rookie of the year in 2012-13, the 6-foot-1 centre was named player of the year in the RSEQ conference in each of her sophomore and junior campaigns, meriting first-team All-Canadian honours both times. A 23-year-old native of Conakry, the capital city of Guinea, she has led McGill to three-consecutive RSEQ titles and three straight CIS championship appearances, where they finished fifth twice before achieving a school-best second-place standing this past season.
 
In 2014-15, Sylla posted a league-leading six “double-doubles” in 16 games, to finish fifth among RSEQ scoring leaders with 12.4 points per contest. She also led the conference with 10.8 rebounds per game, which ranked fourth in the nation. She was third in field-goal shooting (.430), fourth in free-throw percentage (.768) and fourth in blocked shots (12).
 
At McGill's athletic banquet last year, she merited the Uldis Auders Memorial Trophy as most outstanding sophomore student-athlete. This season, she won the school’s Gladys Bean Award as female athlete of the year.
 
In 2014, Sylla was among the CIS Top Eight Academic All-Canadians and received her commendation from Governor-General David Johnston last fall. With a cumulative grade-point average of 3.63 out of 4.0 in the faculty of science, she is on target to merit CIS Academic All-Canadian honours for the third straight year.
 
A co-captain of the Martlets, she was recently named by the RSEQ to serve as an ambassador for “Lait’s Go Sport”, a bursary program which promotes a milk protein shake as an ideal product for athletes.

Sylla has also helped coordinate the team’s annual wheelchair basketball game with the Montreal Action Centre as part of the “Chaire Aware” campaign to promote awareness about physical disabilities. She has participated for the third straight year in the Varsity Council’s annual Christmas food drive and also helped coordinate the team’s annual visit the Montreal Children’s Hospital, to hand out Halloween treats to the young patients, who are unable to leave the hospital.
 
“Mariam brings great raw athleticism and toughness to our team,” says McGill head coach Ryan Thorne. “She is a great competitor who will sacrifice her body for the ball, which makes her a force on the boards. Her ability to knock down the 15-footer, makes her a threat both inside and out, which I believe has contributed largely to our team's success over the past three seasons.”

Mariam Sylla, une étudiante en pharmacologie à l’Université McGill, a été simplement phénoménale lors de ses trois premières saisons au sein du programme de basketball des Martlets.
 
Après avoir été nommée recrue de l’année de SIC en 2012-2013, la centre de 6 pieds 1 a été choisie joueuse la plus utile de la conférence RSEQ et membre de la première équipe d’étoiles canadienne au terme de chacune des deux dernières campagnes. Âgée de 22 ans et originaire de Conakry, capitale de la Guinée, elle a mené les Martlets à trois titres du RSEQ et autant de participations au championnat canadien, aidant les siennes à remporter la médaille d’argent de SIC cette saison, soit le meilleur résultat dans l’histoire du programme.
 
En 2014-2015, Sylla a récolté au moins 10 points et 10 rebonds dans un match à six reprises en 16 rencontres de calendrier régulier et a terminé au cinquième rang au Québec avec 12,4 points par partie. Elle a également dominé la conférence avec 10,8 rebonds par rencontre, soit la quatrième meilleure moyenne au pays. Elle a pris le troisième rang pour le pourcentage de tirs réussis (.430), le quatrième pour le taux de succès de la ligne des lancers francs (.768) et le quatrième pour les tirs bloqués (12).
 
Après avoir mérité le trophée commémoratif Uldis Auders l’an dernier en tant que meilleure athlète de deuxième année de McGill, elle a reçu cette saison le prix Gladys Bean remis à l’athlète féminine par excellence.
 
En 2014, Sylla a été retenue parmi le Top 8 académique canadien de SIC et a été honorée par le gouverneur général David Johnston l’automne dernier. Grâce à sa moyenne de 3,63 en science sur une échelle de 4,0, elle est en voie de mériter le statut d’étoile académique canadienne de SIC pour une troisième année consécutive.
 
Co-capitaine des Martlets, elle a récemment été désignée par le RSEQ comme ambassadrice pour le programme « Lait’s Go Sport », qui fait la promotion d’une boisson protéinée à base de lait comme produit idéal pour les athlètes.
 
Sylla participe également à la coordination du match annuel de basketball en fauteuil roulant au Centre Action Montréal, une initiative de l’équipe dans le cadre de la campagne « Aware Chaire » qui vient en aide aux personnes aux prises avec des handicaps physiques. Elle coordonne également la visite annuelle de l’équipe à l’Hôpital pour enfants de Montréal à l’halloween et participe à la collecte de nourriture du conseil des étudiants athlètes de McGill.
 
« Mariam apporte un côté athlétique et physique à notre équipe, dit l’entraîneur-chef de McGill, Ryan Thorne. Elle est une compétitrice féroce prête à tout donner pour récupérer le ballon. Il n’y a aucun doute qu’elle a grandement contribué à nos succès au cours des trois dernières saisons. »
