The intramural sports program offers the McGill community (full-time McGill students, staff, alumni and Sports Complex members) an opportunity to participate in organized recreational and competitive sports leagues. Depending on the sport, most intramural games take place on week-nights after 17h00, and on weekends beginning at 9h00.
Staff, Alumni, Sports Complex Members, and Continuing Education students must:
• For INDOOR SPORTS purchase a Sports Complex membership for the duration of the season of the sport in question.
• For OUTDOOR SPORTS/HOCKEY purchase an Outdoor/Arena Intramural Membership which entitles participation in Outdoor Soccer, Ultimate, Ice Hockey and Flag Football. However, this membership does not allow access to the Sports Complex itself.
Sports Offered
Basketball, Dodgeball, Roundnet (Spikeball), Ice Hockey, Indoor Cricket, Soccer, Ultimate, Innertube Waterpolo, Volleyball, Flag Football
Leagues, Team Categories and Levels of Play
STEP 1 - CHOOSE YOUR LEAGUE STYLE
The first decision that you'll have to make is whether your team wants to be a competitive team or a recreational/just for fun team:
PLAY-FUN (JUST FOR FUN)
In PLAY-FUN participants participate in a recreational setting. Participants generally have little to no experience in the sport. You are simply here to try something new or just want to have fun outside of a competitive atmosphere. Overly-aggressive and intesnse play are not welcome. Teams in this category do not qualify for advancements or championships however, they are given an extra regular season game. Games are officiated with a smaller staff and teams do not need to adhere to the Intramural Uniform Policy. PLAY-FUN leagues are only offered within the Open team category (See Step 2) and do not have multiple levels/tiers of pay (See Step 3)
PLAY-COMP (COMPETITIVE)
In PLAY-COMP participants range in skill level, but play competitively and expect teammates and opponents to do the same. Game-play is often quicker and more intense than PLAY-FUN, but always respectful. Participants have a good understanding rules and some playing experience. PLAY-COMP teams are eligible for advancements, finals and ultimately the winning of a championship mug. Games are officiated with a full staff and teams are required to adhere to the Intramural Uniform Policy. PLAY-COMP leagues are offered within all team categories (See Step 2) and have multiple levels/tiers of play (See Step 3)
STEP 2 - CHOOSE YOUR TEAM CATEGORY (PLAY-COMP TEAMS ONLY)
The second decision that you'll have to make is which team category you wish to participate in:
OPEN
Men, Women, Two-Spirit People, Gender Non-Conforming People, Non-Binary People. This category welcomes all individuals to participate regardless of gender.
WOMEN
Women, Two-Spirit People, Gender Non-Conforming People, Non-Binary People.
COREC
Men, Women, Two-Spirit People, Gender Non-Conforming People, Non-Binary People. This category welcomes all individuals to participate regardless of gender however, depending on the sport teams must adhere to a maximum number of self-identified men.
For the purposes of our program, the terms 'men' and 'women' are inclusive of two-spirit people, trans people, gender non-conforming people and non-binary peoplem of our community. We have trained our staff to understand gender as a spectrum and encourage individuals to self-select where they feel they belong within the participation structure. Depending on each individual sport and/or its popularity, not all team categories may be offered.
STEP 3 - CHOOSE YOUR LEVEL OF PLAY/TIER (PLAY-COMP TEAMS ONLY)
The last decision that you'll have to make is which level or tier you would wish to participate:
TIER 1 (HIGHLY COMPETITIVE)
Top tier with highly skilled participants. Participants have several years of experience in an advanced setting for that sport.
TIER 2 (MODERATLEY COMPETITIVE)
Middle tier with average skilled participants. Participants have experience in an organized setting for that sport, but may not be as skilled as players in tier 1.
TIER 3 (NOVICE LEVEL OF PLAY)
Lowest tier. Participants have minimal experience in an organized setting for that sport.
Depending on each individual sports and/or its popularity, not all tier options may be offered.
