STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE, Que. -- The McGill lumberjack team earned first place honours in the women's division at their 55th annual Woodsmen Competition, a Canadian Intercollegiate Lumberjacking Association event held at the Macdonald campus in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Saturday.

Winning 10 of 14 events, the team of Stephanie Belanger-Naud, Kimberly Duheme, Evelyn Levac, Julie MacFarlane, Meaghan Dustin and Jessica Logan finished 150 points ahead of the second-place team from Dalhousie Agricultural College.  It was the third consecutive win for McGill and puts them in a strong position to win the CILA Cup as the overall winner of 2014-15 season.

"The team worked hard and already gearing up for Nova Scotia in two weeks," said McGill head coach John Watson.

The McGill men's team finished third, 70 points short of the first-place UNB squad. Led by captain Rony Odermatt, the team of Matthew Burns, Jesse Rogatini-Gamble, Sebastien Latraverse, Bobby Tolhurst and Dominic Mercier-Provencher, captured both the quarter-split and snowshoe events.

McGill's second men's squad earned fifth place and their second women's team were sixth in an eight-team division.

The competition featured 20 teams from eight universities, including Dalhousie Agricultural Campus, Sir Sanford Fleming, UNB, Algonquin and Dartmouth College. Competing in 14 events, the schools showcased traditional logger sports like pole-climbing, axe-throwing, chopping, sawing,  log-rolling and log-tossing events.

The McGill woodsmen have been training and competing since 1954 with the first competition held on Forbes Field at the downtown campus. It moved out to the Macdonald campus in 1961, where the event has been hosted every year since.
